The Role
We are seeking a Subsurface Data Analyst to join our Alaska-based subsurface team. In this role, you will serve as a critical bridge between raw geological, geophysical, and petrophysical data and the actionable insights that drive exploration and production decisions. You will work at the intersection of earth science and data engineering, ensuring that subsurface datasets are properly curated, integrated, analyzed, and made accessible to multidisciplinary teams across the organization.
This position offers the opportunity to work with massive and complex datasets from some of the most prolific hydrocarbon basins in North America, including the North Slope and Cook Inlet regions. You will collaborate closely with geologists, geophysicists, reservoir engineers, and data science teams to transform raw well log data, seismic interpretations, core analysis results, and production histories into structured, reliable, and analytically ready datasets.
Key Responsibilities
- Acquire, validate, clean, and integrate subsurface datasets including well logs (LAS, DLIS formats), formation tops, core analysis data, seismic interpretation outputs, and production data from multiple internal and external sources into centralized data repositories.
- Design and maintain relational and spatial databases using SQL Server, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, and Oracle to ensure data integrity, version control, and efficient retrieval for subsurface workflows.
- Develop automated data pipelines and ETL processes using Python (Pandas, NumPy, GeoPandas) and scripting tools to reduce manual data handling and improve data quality across the Alaska asset teams.
- Perform exploratory data analysis and statistical modeling on petrophysical properties, reservoir parameters, and production trends to identify patterns, anomalies, and opportunities for field development optimization.
- Build and maintain interactive dashboards and visualization tools using Power BI, Spotfire, or Tableau to communicate subsurface data insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders across the organization.
- Collaborate with geoscientists and reservoir engineers to define data requirements, establish naming conventions, and enforce data governance standards consistent with industry best practices and ConocoPhillips' internal data management policies.
- Support machine learning and advanced analytics initiatives by preparing feature-engineered datasets for predictive modeling of reservoir performance, decline curve analysis, and volumetric estimation.
- Document all data workflows, transformation logic, and quality assurance procedures in comprehensive technical documentation to ensure reproducibility and knowledge transfer across teams.
- Participate in cross-functional data review sessions, providing data quality assessments and recommending improvements to existing subsurface data management practices.
- Stay current with emerging technologies in geospatial data management, cloud-based data platforms (AWS, Azure), and open-source geoscience tools to continuously enhance the team's analytical capabilities.
Work Environment
This role is based in Anchorage, Alaska, with flexibility for hybrid or remote work arrangements depending on project requirements and team needs. You will work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment where data-driven decision-making is central to every phase of the exploration and production lifecycle. The position involves regular interaction with teams across multiple time zones, including colleagues in Houston, Calgary, and other global offices. Occasional travel to field operations on the North Slope may be required for data collection, stakeholder meetings, and operational support.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Geoscience, Petroleum Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related technical discipline.
- Demonstrated experience working with subsurface data types including well logs, formation evaluation data, core analysis, seismic data, and production databases.
- Proficiency in SQL for complex querying, data manipulation, and database management in enterprise environments.
- Strong programming skills in Python or R for data analysis, automation, and statistical modeling.
- Familiarity with geoscience software platforms such as Petrel, Kingdom, GeoFrame, or equivalent interpretation and analysis tools.
- Experience with data visualization and business intelligence tools such as Power BI, Spotfire, or Tableau.
- Excellent analytical thinking with the ability to identify data quality issues, inconsistencies, and gaps in large, heterogeneous datasets.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical data concepts for diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Geoscience, Data Science, or a related field.
- 3-7 years of professional experience in subsurface data management, petrophysics, or reservoir characterization within the oil and gas industry.
- Experience with cloud data platforms such as AWS (S3, Redshift, RDS) or Azure Data Services for managing large-scale subsurface datasets.
- Familiarity with GIS platforms (ArcGIS, QGIS) and spatial data analysis techniques.
- Knowledge of data governance frameworks, metadata management, and industry standards such as PPDM or WITSML.
- Experience with version control systems (Git) and collaborative development workflows.
- Prior work experience in Alaska North Slope operations or similar Arctic/subarctic exploration and production environments.
