The Position

Under general supervision, receives property and evidence, documents the receipt, maintains the physical integrity and control and the chain of custody, and physically stores property and evidence in the designated property and evidence room; uses safety precautions and follows procedures to properly handle high risk or dangerous items; prepares and transports evidence for further examination, analysis, and processing including for court proceedings; and performs related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is a non-sworn journey-level class responsible for a variety of technical duties related to the provision of evidence handling and preservation. Incumbents with well-developed technical and support skills are expected to learn specialized rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and activities related to the property and evidence function and to apply them independently. Positions at this level exercise judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Supervision Exercised and Received: Exercises no direct supervision over staff. Receives general supervision from assigned supervisory or management personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities

Examples of Typical Job Functions: The typical job functions of the classification may include, but are not limited to, the functions below and are subject to changes in operational necessity.
  • Receives property and evidence, documents the receipt, maintains the physical integrity and control and the chain of custody, and physically stores property and evidence in the designated property and evidence room.
  • Uses safety precautions and follows procedures to properly handle high risk or dangerous items such as guns, chemical samples, blood, drugs, syringes, and other material to prevent injury, avoid contamination, and ensure chain of custody and appropriate environmental conditions are maintained.
  • Prepares, receives, and transports evidence for further examination, analysis, and processing including for court proceedings; facilitates fingerprint and DNA requests related to package processing; secures and preserves evidence items and completes analysis request forms; ensures chain of custody and proper documentation.
  • Researches, purges, and releases property and evidence; coordinates and prepares the disposal or auction of unclaimed items or items ordered destroyed by the court including biological, illegal, and hazardous materials; prepares proper reports and/or documentation for items to be released to the owner.
  • Receives requests for digital evidence; maintains the Department's property and evidence automated record keeping system; maintains and updates various computer files and records in several software programs, including accurate record keeping for property and evidence status, ownership, court requirements and other pertinent data.
  • Prepares detailed records of evidence inventory and maintains orderly appearance of property file area; catalogs and maintains continuous property inventory record; maintains security of section and key control.
  • Assists with special projects related to the maintenance and handling of property and evidence; researches and prepares appropriate reports, forms, and other correspondence; and

Qualifications

Experience and Education Guidelines: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would most likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Experience: One (1) year of experience in receiving and storing property and/or evidence.
